This FAQ is designed to answer many of the questions you may have regarding the activities or running of the University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra. If you have a question that is not answered here, please use the 'Contact Us' form on this website to send the executive committee your queries.
The UWSO usually rehearses from 7pm - 9:40pm every Tuesday in the Butterworth Hall. Some extra rehearsals may be scheduled nearer to concert dates. Keep checking the rehearsals section of this site for more information.
We expect full attendance at every rehearsal, although this is relaxed in term 3 due to the pressures of exams. If you are unable to attend a rehearsal for any reason, please let us know by emailing absence@uwso.co.uk.
We perform at least one concert a term in the Butterworth Hall. In addition, we also perform concerts on tour, and sometimes concerts off-campus.
You will be expected to provide your own concert dress. Ladies will need to bring a black skirt and top, but please ensure your skirt is at least knee length and that your top is not too low cut and covers your shoulders. Gentlemen will need a Dinner Jacket/tuxedo, dress shirt and black bowtie. For the free concert, dress is all black for both men and women.
In Week 2 of Term 1, the orchestra takes part in a free concert. There are usually two rehearsals before this concert, and the concert is open for anyone to take part in.
If you're a string or percussion player, then the answer is no; we welcome all string players. The string desks are ordered by the Coull Quartet over the course of the year. If you're a woodwind or brass player then you are welcome to participate in the Free Concert without auditioning. However, following this if you wish to continue playing you will be required to take part in a friendly, informal audition. This is absolutely nothing to worry about, and will consist of a prepared piece of your choosing and a piece of sight-reading.
The Orchestra has an active social side, with all encouraged to congregate in the bar after rehearsals. In addition, our Social Secretaries arrange socials, usually off campus in Leamington or Coventry. The bar and our socials are a great way to get to know people in the orchestra and are a lot of fun as well!
We usually go on tour every two years, often with Chorus. This year (2010), we went on a tour to the Netherlands at Easter. Other recent tours have been to Belgium and Italy.
